Live Music at Lizzy's
Many Saturday nights, La Jouissance performs Renaissance (early classical) music in our Party Room. We play Madrrigals, Dances, Carols, Chansons and other types of music.
Today most music is composed for and played by professional musicians. You press a switch to listen to their music. Five to seven hundred years ago, if you wanted music you had to make it yourself. There was a great deal of beautiful music written to be performed by small ensembles of amateur musicians in the parlors of the homes of the musicians or a nobleman.La Jouissance recreates this experience for you in Lizzy's Party Room.
La Jouissance
is a group of lovers of Medieval, Renaissance and early folk music. We are: Director Tom Kurz (recorders, viola da gamba, krumhorn), Sue Cornwall (voice, harpsichord, percussion), Kathy Keleher (recorder, krumhorn, tenor viola da gamba).

Our Waltham store will be open today. Depending on the weather, we may close early. Call the store if you are wondering... 781 893-6677. And note that Waltham has declared a snow emergency, so park in one of the nearby municipal parking lots, if you drive.
The Harvard Square store will be closed today.
Not sure yet about Sunday. Stay tuned to this site for news.

Winter Closing Times - Revised
The first significant snow of the year has arrived. People aren't visiting us quite as late in the evening during the week nights. So, we close down a little bit earlier.
Starting Monday, December 7, our closing times are 10:30 p.m. at the Waltham store and 10:00 p.m. at the Harvard Square store. These closing times will be for Sunday through Thursday. We will still stay open later on Fridays and Saturdays (11:30 in Waltham and 11:00 in Harvard Square).
Occasionally during the winter we may open and then get hit by a storm. If the weather is bad, we may close early. On those days, it is a good idea to call to check our closing time before you head out into the storm. Waltham 781 893-6677 and Harvard Square 617 354-2911. You can also check the web site. We are hoping to develop the discipline to announce such things right here. No promises. At this point I am only up to the point of hoping that I remember to do it. Nick Pappas

Big Discount on Egg Nog Ice Cream
We made way too much Egg Nog Ice Cream for the holidays. Our sales were generally good, but it seems people just didn't want that particular flavor this year.
We are selling out our stock of pre-packed Pints, Quarts, and Gallons at a 60% discount.
This sale is going on at both stores until we sell out of Egg Nog Ice Cream.
Ask for a sample taste if you haven't tried this one before.
If you want to stock up by buying several, the shelf life on them is over 6 months if they are stored properly (0° or lower). We made them in November, so they are good until May.
All sales final, no returns.

Apple Pie Ice Cream
We recently found some great apple pie filling and have started to make Apple Pie ice Cream for the winter months. Many people have asked for it since we last sold it in early 2007. It's a great fall and winter flavor. Enjoy!!!

And Now... Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream
Peach Ice Cream will be on sale for a while because of the lateness of the local peach crop this year.
And it's already time for Fall flavors. First up - Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream. Spicey pumpkin flavor and pieces of pie crust in creamy goodness. Now on sale at both stores and showing up soon at our Retail Outlets.

Peach Ice Cream - finally!!!
We now have Peach Ice Cream available in both of our stores.
We get our peaches from a local orchard, and this year the peaches ripened late due to the many cloudy and rainy days. When we make a flavor, we need to make enough to stock both our stores and the specialty food shops that sell our pre-packed pints. And that means we need over 200 lb. of ripe peaches. We had to wait about 3 weeks until the orchard could give us that many ripe peaches at one time.
Enjoy!

Waltham opening at 6:00
The storm is over, and the roads and sidewalks are OK. The Waltham store will open around 6:00 p.m. this evening (Monday, January 14). Come by for some ice cream.
Another Snow Day!!!
Another significant winter storm is upon us. Schools are closed just about everywhere, and so are we.
Both our Waltham and Harvard Square stores will be closed today, Monday, January 14.
Snowy winter, eh?
Vacation's Over
The wooden floors have been re-finished. The weather is unseasonably warm. So we are re-opening the Waltham store today (Jan. 9) at 11:00.
Enjoy the warm spring weather. Come by for your first cone of the new year.

Waltham Vacation
Our Waltham store will be closed for a few days in early January. We close each year to allow us to do some maintenance, including refinishing our old wooden floors. We plan to re-open on Friday, January 11, but if the weather is good, we might open a couple of days earlier. Stay tuned to this space for more information.
Our Harvard Square store remains open during the closure of the Waltham store.
We are also still available for Sundae Parties during this time, and you can contact us to place ice cream cake orders.
If you have any questions, or wish to contact us, you can send email to us through the "Contact" page on this web site, or you can send email Sundae Party requests through the Sundae Party pages. You can also leave phone messages at the Waltham or Harvard Square stores.

Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream
It must be fall. The weather is cooler, and Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream is now on our menu. If you haven't tasted it, be ready for an ice cream that tastes of a nicely spiced pumpkin pie filling AND pieces of pie crust. Get into the season with a scoop of Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream. It's also available in pre-packed quarts.
Peach Ice Cream
We got enough locally grown peaches to make our first batches of peach ice cream on 9/15, and the ice cream went on sale for the weekend. There is still some of that ice cream in both of our stores, but we may run out temporarily. We will be making more this week, and the new ice cream should be ready for sale by this Wednesday, 8/22.

What's Happening with Flavors at Lizzy's?
Short answer: Plenty has been happening this year.
I decided to develop some new flavors, so this year we introduced Cantaloupe Ice Cream, Kiwi Sorbet, and the recently-named Charles River Crunch. We tested a few others (like the Habanero Pepper ice cream, and a graham cracker flavored ice cream).
The Cantaloupe and Kiwi flavors will be seasonal flavors that will leave the menu shortly and return next summer. Why? The shocking truth is that people don’t seem very interested in buying fruit flavors in the winter. Even in cases where we can get the fruit year round, people don’t seem interested in them during the winter, so we take them off the menu.
By the way, Peach ice cream should arrive in a week or so. We make it from locally grown peaches, and the local growers are just starting to harvest them. They should be available very soon.
What flavors do people look for in the fall and winter? We will have Egg Nog in November and December. We will have Pumpkin Pie from early September until Thanksgiving. Cinnamon will come back on the store menus in September and will probably stay with us until next Spring. And Armagnac and French Plum will return as we deplete our stock of summer fruit flavors.
It is a challenge to figure out what flavors to keep in stock. We always have at least 40. But someone always wants one that is out of season. If you miss one of your favorites, hold on. It will be back.
I'll write more about flavors in a future article. Maybe some observations on traditional flavors. There are some flavors that are hard to find these days. Maybe we should call them Heirloom Ice Creams.

Anique in the News
There is a rumor that Anique Olivier-Monsen will be the subject of an article in a large circulation Boston newspaper. She was spotted with photographer Josh Reynolds in front of Lizzy's this evening.
Nick Pappas July 25, 2007
The winning entry is... Charles River Crunch
Anique Olivier-Monsen, a graduate student at Brandeis, has won our flavor naming contest.
Anique dropped by this week to receive her prize certificates for 52 quarts of ice cream.
Over 630 entries were submitted at our stores in Cambridge and Waltham. Thanks to everyone who submitted and entry. The contest generated a lot of excitement.
New Flavors and a CONTEST
New flavors at both Harvard Square and Waltham.
We want to kick off summer with some new fruit flavors, so we proudly announce Kiwi Sorbet and Cantaloupe Ice Cream. Both flavors contain lots of fresh fruit and natural sweetness.
And loving dark chocolate as I do, I wanted another flavor with dark chocolate ice cream. We found a crunchy almond toffee nugget and liked the result when we mixed it into the dark chocolate ice cream. So, we put that on sale last weekend, but we don't have a name for the flavor.
CONTEST CONTEST CONTEST Name that flavor!
We thought it might be fun to have a contest. If you suggest a name that we like, you will win a year of free ice cream - 52 quarts of pre-packed ice cream.
You must visit either store (Waltham or Harvard Square) to enter. Web entries are not eligible for a prize.

Award Winning Ice Cream
If you click on those photos, you'll see a lot of blue ribbons. Here's the story...
When I decided to start Lizzy's, I knew we would be making great ice cream. After we opened, customers said it was great. But it's all so subjective. I thought it would be good to get some external validation - maybe we could win some awards for our ice cream. But I didn't know where to go, and I was too busy building the business to look around.
Then, last summer I received a letter from the Los Angeles County Fair organizers asking if we would be interested in entering our ice cream in their dairy product competition for 2006. Interesting. California produces more milk and more ice cream than any other state. The L.A. County Fair has been an annual event since 1922. And most importantly to me - the ice cream competition was going to be "professionally judged".
So, with a a mixture of excitement and fear, I filled out the application, bought dry ice and
insulated shipping containers, and arranged for overnight shipment to the Fair.
But what flavors should I send? How many flavors? Better send a bunch, I figured - better chance of winning something. Nine flavors would fit nicely into my two insulated boxes, so that would be the number. The packages went off on August 21st and the judging was held on the 26th. The wait was agonizing.
But the results were miles beyond my dreams - the nine flavors won 5 gold medals, 2 silver
medals, and 1 bronze medal. Eight medal winners out of nine entries!!!
GOLD MEDAL WINNERS
Chocolate Strawberry Chocolate Orgy Ginger Vanilla Yogurt
SILVER MEDAL WINNERS
Coconut Raspberry Chocolate Chip Yogurt
BRONZE MEDAL WINNER
Peach
And that is the story of the awards. Not only do our customers and I like the ice cream, the professional ice cream judges think it's pretty good, too.
